Transformative Growth in Early Education: 54 Nursery Schools in Guyana

The Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, recently announced a remarkable achievement: the establishment of 54 nursery schools throughout Guyana in the past four years, furthering the government’s drive to enhance early childhood education.

This announcement was made during the opening ceremony of the new Non-Pareil Nursery School located on the East Coast of Demerara. The initiative is part of an extensive strategy by the Ministry of Education to create equitable and supportive learning environments for young children.

Addressing attendees including parents and educators, Minister Manickchand reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring that every child, irrespective of their background or location, has access to quality nursery education. “In addition to the 54 new nursery schools, we have renovated 13 and expanded 39 over the last four and a half years,” she highlighted, emphasizing the unprecedented scale of this effort aimed at enhancing the educational landscape.

Despite nursery education not being compulsory in Guyana, a striking 90 percent of children in the relevant age group are enrolled in nursery programs, reflecting the strong inclination of families towards education. The Non-Pareil Nursery School features spacious classrooms and specialized facilities, offering a favorable student-to-teacher ratio that fosters personalized attention.

The Minister also shared insights on a revised curriculum that promotes interactive teaching methods, ensuring children develop essential literacy, numeracy, and life skills early on. With upcoming programs aiming at bolstering these foundational competencies by Grade Four, the ministry encourages parental involvement, stressing that collaborative efforts within the home are crucial for student success.

With the opening of the Non-Pareil Nursery School, families no longer need to travel to distant nurseries, marking a significant step in educational enhancement alongside many other initiatives being pursued by the current administration.
