The government is committed to introducing major legislative and justice reforms to ensure equal access to justice, greater accountability, and improved efficiency in the court system. This effort aims to restore public trust and confidence in the justice system.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali emphasized the need for technological advancements in court operations, case management, and human resources. He also highlighted the importance of legislative changes to make judges, magistrates, and legal practitioners more accountable and transparent.
The government plans to introduce case disposal and clearance rate standards, as well as a robust disciplinary process to ensure timely delivery of decisions. The President also announced that the Judicial Service Commission will fill key vacancies in the High Court and Magistrate Court, increasing the complement of commissioners and appointing judicial research assistants.
These reforms are aimed at strengthening the capacity of the courts to deal with cases more efficiently. The government will launch a revised edition of the laws of Guyana and law reports from 2008 to 2021, making Guyana’s laws easily accessible and user-friendly for all citizens.
Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo stressed that the reform is not about political interference but about restoring public confidence in the justice system. He emphasized the importance of having courts follow legal precedence and authorities, and highlighted the need to provide access to justice for poor people as well.
