On Tuesday, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand officially opened a state-of-the-art $25.3 million nursery school at Tapakuma Lake, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), marking another significant milestone in the government’s efforts to provide quality early education to children across Guyana.
The 17-seat facility is designed to cater to the growing need for preschool education in rural areas like Tapakuma Lake. Manickchand emphasized that every village deserves its own dedicated nursery school, where young minds can flourish and receive the support they require for their development.
In a historic first, children from Huridiah, Acquero, Koko, Cabrora, and Sheba will now have access to a facility located in their own community. No longer must they embark on arduous journeys by boat or travel long distances to attend school. This new nursery school is a beacon of hope for the region, providing a safe and nurturing environment that promotes academic excellence.
Manickchand’s administration has been working tirelessly to improve the quality of education in Guyana, with significant investments made in recent years. Over 67 new nursery schools have been constructed across the country, adding to the existing network of over 420 facilities. The government is committed to deploying trained teachers and providing essential support such as the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant, free textbooks, and breakfast programs.
This innovative approach has already yielded impressive results, with almost 16,000 pupils writing the 2025 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) last year. More than 9,000 teachers have also received training over the past three and a half years, demonstrating the government’s dedication to providing quality education to every child in Guyana.
The Mashabo Nursery School commissioning earlier this week further solidifies the administration’s commitment to ensuring that all children, regardless of their location, have access to quality early education. By empowering young minds with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed, we can create a brighter future for generations to come.
