President Dr. Irfaan Ali has conveyed his deepest sympathies upon the death of James Singh, the former Commissioner of Forests, referring to him as a “mighty tree” whose profound influence shaped Guyana’s environmental heritage.
In his heartfelt tribute, President Ali celebrated Singh’s extensive career, highlighting his unwavering commitment to safeguarding and sustainably managing the forests of Guyana.
As the head of the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC), Singh was instrumental in promoting the nation’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), establishing Guyana as a key player in global climate initiatives. “James’s leadership at GFC was groundbreaking, allowing Guyana to fulfill critical international commitments related to our LCDS. Under his guidance, we maintained low deforestation rates, paving the way to profit from carbon credits and leading the global battle against climate change,” stated President Ali.
Praising Singh as one of the “unseen roots” in the forestry sector, the President commended his quiet yet impactful dedication to sustainability. He emphasized that Singh’s legacy will motivate future generations to uphold the values of stewardship and respect for the environment.
As the President expressed sincere condolences to Singh’s family, he noted that in the realm of public service, Singh’s legacy will continue to illuminate their path towards a sustainable future. With over two decades of service until his medical leave in 2020, Singh was a crucial advocate for forestry governance initiatives, enhancing sustainable timber practices and contributing as Chairman of the Latin American and Caribbean Forest Commission.
