Donald Trump revealed that Vladimir Putin has vowed to retaliate against Ukraine’s significant drone assault on Russian airbases. Following a lengthy phone conversation with Putin, Trump stated, “President Putin insisted that he must respond to the attack on the airfields.”
Despite their dialogue, Trump cautioned that the talks would not swiftly lead to peace between the two nations. Conversations also touched upon Iran, with Trump indicating Putin offered assistance in nuclear negotiations related to the country.
The Kremlin conveyed that Ukraine is attempting to undermine negotiations and described the Kyiv government as a “terrorist organization.” Moreover, both leaders discussed rebuilding relations, acknowledging the substantial potential for cooperation between the two countries.
This communication was the first since Ukraine executed a surprising drone strike on June 1, targeting Russian airbases that housed nuclear-capable bombers. Following the attack, it became known that the US was not previously informed.
Last week, Trump indicated a two-week ultimatum for Putin, threatening to alter the US’s stance towards Russia if peace progress remains stagnant. He criticized Putin’s escalating military actions.
Additionally, a Ukrainian delegation was to meet US Senators to deliberate on defense support and strategies for addressing the conflict.
The latest round of peace negotiations in Istanbul yielded no significant progress, though talks on swapping prisoners of war continue. Trump believes both parties are moving forward despite the ongoing conflict and tensions.
Concerning Iran, Trump noted that Putin expressed willingness to engage in talks to hasten a resolution regarding nuclear armament, emphasizing the need for a prompt and definitive response from Iran.
