Tsunami warnings have been lifted across much of the Pacific after a powerful earthquake, measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale, struck near Russia’s Far East on Wednesday around 11:25 local time (00:25 BST). This event triggered mass evacuations, affecting over two million people in regions including parts of Russia, Japan, and Hawaii.
Fortunately, reports indicate no severe damage or injuries resulted from the quake. A tourist in Hawaii shared, “The disaster we were expecting did not come,” despite experiencing wave heights of 1.2m at Oahu and larger waves hitting Maui. Hawaii’s Governor Josh Green had cautioned residents about the dangers of tsunamis, but the subsequent assessment revealed only minimal wave action.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre downgraded Hawaii’s tsunami alert to an advisory, signaling potential for strong waves and currents but no significant tsunami threat. Residents were advised to return home cautiously as minor tidal surges were observed in California and British Columbia, where a tsunami advisory was initially issued but later canceled.
Japan also felt the earthquake’s impact, with waves exceeding a metre hitting the Pacific coast. However, authorities reported no significant damage. Meanwhile, French Polynesia and other Pacific regions were on alert, although most warnings were eventually rescinded as the situation stabilized.
Overall, while the quake was powerful with numerous aftershocks, it primarily resulted in successful evacuation efforts without the devastating consequences many had feared.
