The Ministry of Education inaugurated its pioneering Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Exposition and Fair on Tuesday, reflecting its commitment to elevating skills across the nation under the theme, “Empowering Youths, Elevating Skills: TVET as a Catalyst for Inclusion.” Held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, the event gathered students, educators, industry participants, and the general public to observe the government’s significant investment in technical education and the ongoing advancements at vocational institutes across Guyana.
In her keynote address, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand highlighted initiatives to strengthen the TVET sector, noting a substantial increase in secondary schools offering Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) subjects—from just nine in 2019 to 74 today. She affirmed that infrastructural investments have led to state-of-the-art TVET facilities in nine out of ten regions, including new Practical Instruction Centres in various locations.
Minister Manickchand detailed efforts to integrate practical subjects like agricultural science into the curriculum, aiming for every secondary school to have functional shade houses for agriculture. She expressed the government’s desire to equip youths for active participation in emerging sectors, particularly in oil and gas.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Education Officer (Technical) Ritesh Tularam noted the fair represents significant growth in vocational education, which is now a vital component for a thriving and inclusive Guyana. He encouraged stakeholders to engage with the country’s first-ever TVET policy document to understand their roles in this educational transformation, emphasizing the accessibility and quality of technical education nationwide.
