As Typhoon Wipha approaches the southern coast of China, authorities are on high alert. The national observatory has issued a yellow warning for the sixth typhoon of the season, expected to unleash powerful winds and heavy rainfall across coastal regions, particularly in Guangdong and Hainan provinces.
Emergency responses have escalated in both provinces, with Hainan activating a Level IV emergency at 9 a.m. and Guangdong upgrading to Level II shortly thereafter. Farmers in Zhuhai City are hurriedly harvesting rice in anticipation of the storm’s impending arrival.
The Hainan Meteorological Service forecasts Wipha will approach coastal areas from Shenzhen to Wenchang, likely making landfall between Sunday afternoon and night. Heavy rain and strong winds are expected in Hainan from Saturday until July 22, and maritime activities in the Qiongzhou Strait could face disruptions during this period.
Key infrastructure is also affected; the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will halt operations early Sunday, and numerous train services in Guangdong will be suspended on July 20. The capital city of Hainan, Haikou, could see significant waterlogging, while Guangdong braces for severe thunderstorms and tidal waves.
In readiness for the storm, Guangdong has prepared specialized rescue teams, vessels, and helicopters to ensure safety and swift recovery efforts.
