The U.S. Army is enhancing its combat capabilities with innovative technology, namely the SMASH 2000L smart rifle scope. This weaponry upgrade, unveiled during a recent live training exercise in Germany, demonstrates a leap forward in counter-drone defense.
Announced by President Trump at Fort Bragg, these high-tech scopes are part of a $13 million contract awarded to Israeli firm Smart Shooter Ltd. The new scopes integrate advanced cameras, sensors, and artificial intelligence, enabling soldiers to lock onto drones and automatically fire when a hit is ensured. This technology allows a single soldier to take down an enemy drone, simplifying the process that previously relied on more complex systems.
During a multinational training event dubbed Project Flytrap on June 6, soldiers from the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment effectively demonstrated how the SMASH 2000L, weighing 2.5 pounds, can be easily mounted on standard-issue rifles. This essential support for troops comes in response to the growing threat posed by drones in modern warfare, as evident in conflicts like the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
By empowering soldiers with streamlined, portable counter-drone systems, the Army aims to enhance readiness against widespread drone surveillance and attacks seen in various combat zones around the world.
