The United Kingdom has reiterated its unwavering support for Guyana’s recognized territorial integrity as tensions with Venezuela rise.
Baroness Chapman of Darlington, the UK’s Minister of State for International Development, Latin America, and the Caribbean, highlighted that the UK is collaborating with international partners to seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing turmoil in Venezuela, which has raised significant concerns.
In an official statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Baroness Chapman stated, “We are deeply concerned by reports of repression and arbitrary detentions, and we reaffirm our support for Guyana’s internationally-recognised territorial integrity.”
This assertion comes as Venezuela persists in its claim over Guyana’s Essequibo region, despite the dispute currently being addressed at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The UK’s stance aligns with a coalition of international allies, including the United States, Canada, and CARICOM, who have publicly endorsed Guyana’s sovereignty over Essequibo and denounced Venezuela’s unilateral actions.
