The UK government has placed sanctions on two Israeli ministers known for their far-right views, citing their “numerous incitements of violence against Palestinian people” in the occupied West Bank. Itamar Ben-Gvir, the National Security Minister, and Bezalel Smotrich, the Finance Minister, will be barred from entering the UK and have their UK assets frozen, as declared by the Foreign Secretary.
David Lammy condemned the actions of both ministers, pointing to their history of inciting extremist violence and grave violations of Palestinian human rights. In contrast, Israel labeled these actions as “outrageous,” asserting that elected officials should not face such measures.
These sanctions align with a broader initiative involving countries like Norway, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, emphasizing the UK’s commitment to addressing the escalating violence faced by Palestinian communities. The Foreign Office highlighted the necessity for accountability and a push towards a two-state solution.
Both ministers have faced backlash for opposing humanitarian aid to Gaza and advocating for the resettlement of Palestinians. Their ultra-nationalist political factions are critical to the Israeli government’s stability, holding significant power within the ruling coalition.
In light of the increasing violence recorded in the West Bank, UK officials expressed the need for immediate action against the rising tide of extremism, holding Ben-Gvir and Smotrich accountable for their role in settler violence that has led to civilian deaths and displacements.
