The United Nations has condemned a targeted Israeli attack that killed six journalists in Gaza, calling it a grave breach of international law. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, targeted Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif and five other journalists, leaving two others dead. Israel’s military claimed that Sharif was involved with Hamas, but provided little evidence to support its allegations.
Media rights groups and countries such as Qatar have widely condemned the attack, with the UK Prime Minister’s office calling for an independent investigation into the incident. The Foreign Press Association has expressed outrage over the targeted killing, stating that the Israeli military had repeatedly labelled Palestinian journalists as militants without verifiable evidence.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has also condemned the attack, saying that Israel’s actions were a clear example of its longstanding pattern of accusing journalists of being terrorists without providing credible proof. The UN Human Rights office has called for immediate access to Gaza for all journalists and has expressed grave concern over the lack of transparency from Israel regarding the killing of the Al Jazeera news crew.
The attack on journalists in Gaza is part of a broader crisis of violence and human rights abuses that have plagued the region. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 186 journalists have been killed since October 2023, making it the deadliest period for journalists since the organization began tracking such data in 1992.
The international community has also expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with five more people dying from malnutrition in the past 24 hours. The Israeli government’s restrictions on international news organizations have made it increasingly difficult for journalists to report freely from the region.
