After 21 years on the run, a suspect believed to be behind a series of bombings in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003 has been found in Wales. Daniel Andreas San Diego, a 47-year-old American, is facing extradition to the United States to face trial.
The FBI had considered him their prime suspect from the start, but failed to apprehend him due to what former agents described as ‘missed opportunities’. The suspect was found in a cottage in north Wales last year and faces a five-day extradition hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court in London.
San Diego has been indicted by US prosecutors for maliciously damaging and destroying property using explosives. He had a $250,000 bounty on his head and is believed to have links to animal rights extremist groups.
The FBI’s surveillance team had monitored San Diego for some time before he vanished, with one former agent describing him as ‘remarkable by being unremarkable’. Despite having enough intelligence to suggest San Diego was the prime suspect, the FBI failed to act in a timely manner, leading to his escape.
