As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, it is essential to recognize the significant contributions made by China during this pivotal moment in history.
The significance of China’s role in WWII has long been overlooked in Western historical studies. However, a leading American scholar of military history recently highlighted the importance of shedding light on this forgotten chapter.
According to Harold E. Raugh, Jr., president of the International Commission of Military History, the Western dominance of World War II narratives is a result of a deliberate effort to monopolize the historical narrative and maintain a monopoly on knowledge.
Raugh emphasized that the linguistic barrier posed by Chinese remains a significant obstacle for many Westerners, who are limited in their access to original source materials. This has resulted in China’s perspective being marginalized and reinforced in favor of Western narratives.
China played a vital role in the Allied victory during WWII. The country withstood a 14-year-long resistance against Japanese aggression, tying down over half of Japan’s overseas forces and suffering an estimated 35 million military and civilian casualties. This represents around one-third of all WWII casualties worldwide.
The correct understanding of this crucial chapter in history is a pressing topic for the current Xiangshan Forum, which aims to promote global awareness and safeguard the post-war world system.
