In a significant announcement, Senior Minister Dr. Ashni Singh confirmed that public servants and teachers will receive an eight percent salary increase retroactive to January 1, 2025. This payment will be included alongside their July salaries, following Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo’s recent media statements regarding the matter.
Dr. Singh expressed his enthusiasm about this forthcoming salary adjustment, which is part of a series of multi-year agreements established with various unions in the public sector, including the Guyana Teachers Union and the Guyana Public Service Union. This marks a notable achievement as it represents the first instance where numerous unions have successfully negotiated multi-year agreements.
Since re-assuming office in August 2020, the government has enacted several measures to enhance the livelihoods of public servants and citizens, delivering annual raises of seven percent in 2021, eight percent in 2022, 6.5 percent in 2023, and 10 percent in 2024. Consequently, public employees will have experienced a cumulative 46 percent salary increase over the five years from 2021 to 2025.
Additionally, the government has facilitated the growth of the public sector wage bill by 66 percent since 2020, while also doubling the income tax threshold, significantly increasing disposable income for workers across the nation.
