In an effort to alleviate financial burdens on families, the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) has revealed plans for a transportation grant specifically for students during its forthcoming term. Vice President and PPP General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo announced that this initiative will complement the recent measures taken to make university education and other forms of tertiary education free, as well as covering examination costs.
The grant aims to make commuting more affordable for students, and details are expected to be unveiled when the party releases its manifesto for the 2025 elections next month. Jagdeo mentioned that the government may offer this transportation aid on an annual basis to help parents manage school-related costs.
Highlighting the results of previous investments in education, Jagdeo pointed to improved student performance in the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA). Between 2020 and 2025, public investment in education increased significantly, soaring from $53 billion to $185 billion, with $36.2 billion allocated this year for school construction and upgrades.
Moreover, the Ministry of Education has enhanced its school feeding program, benefiting nearly 90,000 students, and reinstated the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant and uniform allowance, which was previously discontinued. Additionally, all students, regardless of school type, will have their CSEC exam fees covered for up to eight subjects. These developments showcase the government’s commitment to ensuring educational access and equity in Guyana.
