The Austin Police Department has raised an urgent alert regarding McArthur Mathis, an inmate who escaped from The Cross Creek Psychiatric and Addiction Hospital in Texas. Mathis, a registered sex offender, was being held there after his arrest on January 2 in Grimes County for various offenses, including unlawful possession of a firearm, aggravated assault, and burglary.
On the night of his escape, police responded to a welfare check only to discover that Mathis had forcibly exited the building by kicking the back door open and scaling a six-foot fence. Authorities suspect he may attempt to reach familiar contacts in the surrounding counties of Grimes, Lavaca, Brazos, or Gonzales.
Due to his violent criminal history, law enforcement has classified Mathis as armed and dangerous. They urge anyone with relevant information to reach out to the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office at (936) 873-2151 or contact Crimestoppers at (936) 873-2000.
