The United States Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, has addressed concerns over her comments regarding a sanctioned businessman, Azruddin Mohamed, who is running for president in the upcoming elections. In a statement, Ambassador Theriot emphasized that she was stating facts and did not intend to interfere in Guyana’s electoral process. She clarified that any support from the US would only be offered upon request from the Guyanese government.
The ambassador’s comments came after she noted that being sanctioned by the US could have consequences for US-Guyana relations, citing similar situations in other countries.
Azruddin Mohamed has been sanctioned by the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) due to allegations of money laundering, drug trafficking, and gold smuggling. Despite the sanctions, he is running for president as the candidate of his newly formed party, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN).
The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has approved WIN to contest the elections on September 1. Ambassador Theriot stressed that the US has no interest in interfering in Guyana’s internal affairs and will respect the country’s sovereignty.
