Kilmar Ábrego García, a 29-year-old from El Salvador, has been brought back to the United States after being mistakenly deported in March. He faces prosecution on federal charges related to a trafficking conspiracy alleged to have lasted several years, wherein he purportedly moved undocumented migrants across states from Texas.
El Salvador released Mr. Ábrego García following a U.S. arrest warrant. His attorney has deemed the charges “preposterous.” A January indictment issued in Tennessee accuses him of being significantly involved in a smuggling operation that allegedly transported undocumented individuals over 100 times, dating back to 2016. Notably, one of the accusations includes transporting members of MS-13, labeled a foreign terrorist organization by the United States.
Although previously implied to have ties with the gang, Mr. Ábrego García denies these allegations. Additional claims involving the trafficking of weapons and narcotics into the U.S. have also surfaced, but he has not been charged with those offenses.
After a recent court hearing in Nashville, he remains in federal custody pending a scheduled arraignment on June 13. His lawyers argue he has no prior convictions in either the U.S. or El Salvador, framing the government’s actions as an abuse of power rather than a pursuit of justice. President Donald Trump labeled him a “bad guy,” supporting the decision to return him for trial.
