During a press conference on Thursday, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), reaffirmed that the United States has substantial evidence backing the sanctions imposed on businessman Azruddin Mohammed and his family.
Jagdeo emphasized that while there may be differing opinions regarding the depth of this evidence, its existence is undeniable. He referenced comments from U.S. Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, who stated that a “mountain load of evidence” underpins these sanctions.
The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Mohamed, his father Nazar Mohamed, and former government official Mae Thomas for alleged tax evasion linked to gold exports, alongside corruption claims. Jagdeo pointed out that the allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering involving Colombian cocaine and Venezuelan gold had been previously reported by Reuters, highlighting investigations by multiple U.S. agencies.
The PPP General Secretary clarified that it is not the party making accusations against the Mohameds, but rather international reporting. Furthermore, he noted that Azruddin’s posting of a questionable invoice on social media ignited scrutiny from the Guyana Revenue Authority.
Jagdeo dismissed claims of political persecution against Azruddin, asserting that the PPP did not impose sanctions on him, but they are required to act in light of the existing evidence. He mentioned that several associates of Azruddin have lost their visas due to their connections with him and affirmed the importance of ongoing investigations by local authorities.
