President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the US has resumed military supplies to Ukraine after a brief halt in critical arms shipments. This decision follows US President Donald Trump’s agreement with NATO to send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine in response to increased Russian aerial assaults.
Zelensky had expressed concern over the impact the paused shipments—specifically, Patriot systems and precision artillery shells—could have on Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Recent weeks have seen a surge in Russian drone and missile attacks resulting in devastating civilian casualties.
In light of these developments, Zelensky requested 10 Patriot systems, which are known for their effectiveness in detecting and intercepting missiles. Under the new arrangement, NATO will procure these systems from the US and provide them to Ukraine, with member nations, including Germany and Norway, ready to assist financially.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of allies, such as Germany and Spain, potentially supplying their existing Patriot batteries to quickly bolster Ukraine’s defenses.
The urgency to enhance Ukraine’s air defenses comes amidst a significant increase in drone strikes by Russia, with the country aiming to surpass previous attack records. June marked the highest civilian casualties in Ukraine in three years, prompting the US to reaffirm its commitment to support Ukraine militarily.
Trump indicated additional weapons would be sent to Kyiv, highlighting the ongoing challenges in achieving a diplomatic resolution to the conflict with Russia.
