The United States has launched a large-scale operation against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria, following a deadly attack on American forces in the country. The strike, code-named Operation Hawkeye Strike, aimed to eliminate ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites.
Airplanes from Jordan were also involved in the operation, which targeted multiple locations in central Syria.
The US Central Command confirmed that the strike was a response to the December 13 attack on Palmyra, where two US soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed. The Syrian government has been fully supportive of the US action.
President Donald Trump said the US is ‘inflicting very serious retaliation’ on ISIS, as promised, and that they will hunt down and kill their enemies.
The strike was carried out by fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery, resulting in significant losses for ISIS. The exact targets of the strike are not yet known, but officials say it is a declaration of vengeance against those who target Americans.
