A Virginia resident has pleaded guilty to serious federal charges, including possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle and multiple unregistered destructive devices, following the seizure of the largest stockpile of finished explosives in FBI history. In December 2024, Brad Spafford was apprehended after authorities uncovered around 150 pipe bombs and other explosives at his home near Norfolk.
In court, Spafford was noted for making alarming statements regarding political figures, including using photographs of former President Joe Biden for target practice and expressing malevolent thoughts towards Vice President Kamala Harris. The investigation initiated in 2023 stemmed from a tip-off by a law enforcement informant, leading agents to the discovery of volatile materials in his residence.
Following his arrest, judges deemed him a significant danger, particularly noting a past incident in 2021 where he lost three fingers due to a homemade explosives mishap. Although Spafford’s initial plea was not guilty, he shifted his stance in light of the evidence. He now faces a potential sentence of up to 10 years on each charge, with sentencing scheduled for December.
The case underscores growing concerns surrounding domestic threats and extremism in the current political climate.
