During the 17th Straits Forum held in Xiamen, Fujian Province, on June 15, 2025, China’s chief political advisor, Wang Huning, urged for enhanced unity and peaceful development between Taiwan and the mainland. He underscored the enduring bonds between fellow Chinese on both sides of the Straits and highlighted the significant trend toward national reunification.
Wang, who holds a prominent position in the Communist Party of China, encouraged participants to seize the moment for national rejuvenation and foster a strong sense of cultural identity. He emphasized the need to protect shared Chinese heritage, maintain peace, and advocate for national reunification.
Marking the 80th anniversaries of pivotal historical events, such as the victory in the Chinese People’s War against Japanese Aggression, Wang portrayed Taiwan’s return as a collective memory crucial for both sides. He reaffirmed the significance of the one-China principle and condemned separatist movements, urging collaborative efforts for stability.
Wang called for continued support for Taiwan’s citizens, particularly the youth, to cultivate their pride in being Chinese, while also enhancing integration across the Straits. Former Kuomintang leader Ma Ying-jeou echoed Wang’s sentiments, highlighting the mutual desire for peaceful relations and advocating deeper cooperation founded on the 1992 Consensus. The forum, with over 7,000 attendees from various sectors, aims to foster people-to-people connections and integrated development across the region.
