During a media briefing on July 12, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the collaborative spirit between China and ASEAN nations amidst the challenges posed by unilateralism and protectionism, particularly in light of U.S. tariffs.
Wang pointed out the significant advancements achieved during the ASEAN Plus foreign ministers’ meetings. Notably, a new version of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area negotiations was concluded, set for approval and signature at the October leaders’ meeting. This marks a crucial step towards enhancing regional economic integration.
The two sides also established an action plan for a comprehensive strategic partnership to outline over 40 cooperative goals for the upcoming five years, ensuring robust collaborative efforts across multiple fields.
On the contentious South China Sea matter, progress was made with the completion of the third draft of the Code of Conduct, aiming for final consultations by 2026, thereby fostering peace and stability in the region.
Wang emphasized China’s commitment to creating a shared future with neighboring countries, declaring that the China-ASEAN partnership is among the most dynamic in the Asia-Pacific landscape. He called for a collective choice towards openness and multilateralism, arguing that such approaches lead to progress, in contrast to the regression caused by isolation.
He also criticized the high tariffs imposed by the U.S., labeling them as detrimental to global trade and economic recovery, asserting that such measures contradict the principles of international commerce and cooperation.
