King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, the ruler of South Africa’s large Zulu community, has issued a challenge to cultural expert Prof Musa Xulu in a high-stakes stick fight. The king claimed that he was insulted by Xulu’s remarks during an interview with local media.
King Misuzulu defended his right to renovate the newly built royal palace, stating that the 152 million rand spent on renovation is a ‘small price’ compared to the cultural significance of the event. He called upon Xulu to meet him in a stick fight, saying he would take him up if he wanted it.
Xulu claimed that his comments about public finance were not an insult and stated that he had nothing personal against the king. He also emphasized that stick-fighting is part of Zulu culture, but only between equals. The professor has never participated in a stick fight since before he was a teenager.
The king’s challenge comes at a time when tensions are high within the Zulu community. King Misuzulu was crowned in 2022 after a year-long feud following the death of his father and mother, with two of his brothers challenging his claim to the throne. The throne has no formal political power but wields significant influence over the Zulu nation.
The challenge between King Misuzulu and Prof Xulu is set to be a test of cultural pride and bravado. Will the king’s assertion of his right to renovate the palace be matched by Xulu’s ability to defend himself in a stick fight? Only time will tell.
