Ali says diaspora investment vehicle will launch soon

President Irfaan Ali said a state-backed vehicle would soon give Guyanese abroad a way to invest in a planned fertiliser plant and gas pumping plant. Guyana Times reported the proposal, but did not say the vehicle was operating or had raised funds.

The proposed diaspora investment vehicle is not yet described as operating: Guyana Times reported that President Irfaan Ali said at a Thursday evening forum in Queens, New York, that it would launch soon. Ali said it would mobilise diaspora resources for two projects: a planned fertiliser plant and a gas pumping plant.

Ali’s comments about international investor interest were broader than the proposed diaspora channel. Guyana Times reported that he cited private investors’ commitments of hundreds of millions of US dollars to projects in Guyana as part of his response to critics of the country’s prospects. Those commitments are not reported as funds raised by the diaspora vehicle.
