China Promotes Aquaculture in Arid Regions to Boost Food Security
The South China Morning Post reports that the Chinese government is promoting saline-alkaline aquaculture and inland fisheries to diversify food sources and utilize unused land, exemplified by freshwater crayfish farming in Xinjiang.
According to the South China Morning Post, the government is encouraging the development of saline-alkaline aquaculture and inland fisheries as a means to diversify food supplies and utilize land that has been abandoned. In Maigaiti county, located in the Kashgar prefecture of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, a farm is raising Australian freshwater crayfish in an area where sand covers 90 per cent of the land near the Taklamakan Desert. As the National Day "golden week" holiday commences, this farm is harvesting between 250 and 300kg (551 to 661lbs) of the high-quality crustaceans daily, which are native to rivers and streams in Australia.
