Chinese 'Coffee Grandma' Becomes Sensation After Saving Family Cafe
An 86-year-old woman in China, known as the "Coffee Grandma," has gained social media fame for running a coffee shop in downtown Qingdao, Shandong province, for more than ten years after taking over the business from her son in 2015.
According to the South China Morning Post, an 86-year-old grandmother in China has become a social media sensation for managing a coffee shop for over a decade. She assumed control of the business from her son in 2015, despite having no prior experience with coffee.
Zhao Qiying, who is affectionately called the "Coffee Grandma," stated that the establishment, situated in downtown Qingdao within eastern China’s Shandong province, was close to financial ruin because of her son's perceived lack of business skill, as reported by the Peninsular Metropolis News.
At that point, Zhao was feeling down following the death of her husband. Her son proposed that she manage the coffee shop as a way to provide her with a distraction, suggesting she only act as a doorkeeper because the shop saw few patrons.
Zhao expressed a desire to learn how to prepare coffee for patrons, even though she initially had reservations. However, because no educational institution would enroll her as a student due to her age, she decided to educate herself. She developed her abilities by studying coffee-making books and receiving guidance from her son.
