CWI cuts player retainers and suspends two domestic tournaments
Cricket West Indies announced a 25% reduction in international players’ retainer fees and shortened domestic players’ retainer contracts to seven months. It also suspended this year’s men’s Super50 and women’s T20 Blaze, while describing Pan American Games places and Olympic qualification as separate pathways.
Kaieteur News reports that Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced a 25% reduction in international players’ retainer fees; their contracts will remain 12 months. Domestic players’ retainer contracts will be reduced to seven months. CWI also suspended this year’s men’s Super50 and women’s T20 Blaze, citing operational costs. The board has linked the changes to financial pressures, including domestic travel and accommodation costs. It said it had spent more than US$80 million with domestic airlines over 15 years.
The ICC approved a US$16 million loan facility for CWI in July, available in three tranches over the following year to provide temporary cash-flow relief. Kaieteur News reports that the facility has repayment terms, while meeting critical metrics is a condition for accessing funds, beginning in September. The source does not describe those metrics as repayment conditions.
The competitions serve different sporting pathways. The top four finishers in the 2025-26 Super50 and T20 Blaze were announced as qualifiers for the men’s and women’s events, respectively, at the Pan American Games. Separately, CWI announced invitational tournaments for the men’s and women’s 2028 Olympic events; individual countries’ cricket boards will bear their costs, and the winners will advance to ICC Olympic qualifying tournaments. For ODI preparation, CWI said it would arrange white-ball matches against a visiting England A team in November, followed by a team camp ahead of the February-March 2027 World Cup qualifier.
