Five Arrested on Suspicion of Inciting Racial Hatred at North London Protest
The Metropolitan Police reported that five individuals were detained on suspicion of inciting racial hatred during a spontaneous protest outside the Board of Deputies of British Jews' office in north London. The police stated that slogans calling for intifada were chanted by the group.
Based on reporting by BBC UK:
The Metropolitan Police stated that five people have been taken into custody on suspicion of inciting racial hatred during a spontaneous demonstration held outside the Camden headquarters of the UK's largest Jewish community organization, the Board of Deputies of British Jews. The force indicated that slogans advocating for intifada were chanted by the group during the event. These individuals remain in custody.
These arrests occurred while various student pro-Palestinian demonstrations were taking place across London, three years after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the taking of 251 hostages by the militant group. In response to the attack, Israel initiated a military offensive in Gaza, which the Hamas-run health ministry reported has caused over 74,000 Palestinian fatalities.
In a statement released following the arrests on Wednesday morning, the Board of Deputies asserted that the group would not be subjected to intimidation or threats, and they expressed gratitude to the police for their prompt action. The Metropolitan Police noted that the term intifada, which was used during the north London protest, gained prominence during the Palestinian uprising against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1987. Jewish organizations have characterized the term as a call for violence against Jewish people, whereas pro-Palestinian groups maintain it signifies a call for peaceful resistance to the occupation of Israel.
Separately, pro-Palestinian demonstrators participated in another demonstration in the capital, despite police having requested that the march, organized by the University of London Coalition, be canceled. The Board of Deputies is scheduled to hold a vigil at Richmond Terrace, located near Whitehall in central London, later on Wednesday.
