Japan Considers Nearly Doubling Defense Spending Over Next Five Years

Japan's government and ruling coalition are examining a plan to nearly double defense expenditures over the coming five years, a move linked to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's efforts to bolster military strength. The proposed spending increase, which could reach 70 trillion to 80 trillion yen (US$457 billion to US$508 billion) starting in April 2027, is attributed in part to the rising cost of defense equipment due to a weaker yen.

According to the South China Morning Post, two individuals familiar with the matter indicate that Japan's government and its ruling coalition are contemplating a significant increase in defense spending over the next five years as part of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's initiative to enhance the nation's military capabilities.

If this proposal is adopted, the defense build-up spending for the five-year period commencing in April 2027 would be set between 70 trillion and 80 trillion yen, which equates to approximately US$457 billion to US$508 billion. This figure represents an increase of about 1.8 times compared to the roughly 43 trillion yen allocated under the existing five-year plan, which commenced in the financial year 2023.

One source familiar with the matter stated that the new spending is anticipated to cover acquisitions such as substantial quantities of drones. The same source also mentioned that the cost of procuring defense equipment has been inflated by a weaker yen.

It was noted that the final figure remains subject to change as the government finalizes the budget near the end of the year and revises its three security-related documents. The Japan's defense ministry stated that it had no comment at this time.
