Suspected Terror Plot at RAF Fairford Linked to Foreign Actor, Officials State
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford clearly involves a foreign actor, while Tehran has denied any involvement. Five UK nationals were arrested in connection with the incident, which involved suspicious vehicles near the base used by US forces for strikes against Iran.
According to the BBC UK, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted that the suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford "clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor." Speaking to Fox News on Monday, Rubio mentioned that the situation relates to dealing with elements globally, citing Iran as an example of a nation that has openly threatened American interests. He did not provide specific evidence or further details regarding the matter. Tehran has strongly denied any involvement in the incident.
A major incident was declared over the weekend after three "suspicious vehicles" were observed near the RAF base in Gloucestershire, a location utilized by US forces for strikes against Iran. Dozens of residences were evacuated after the vehicles were reported to police in the early hours of Sunday morning. Five men, all UK nationals in their 20s, were detained on suspicion of terror offenses and subsequently released on bail.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, who heads Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP), informed Fox News on Monday that officers are examining all possibilities, including the possibility that the activity might be carried out by proxies, or by individuals who are either knowingly or unknowingly acting on behalf of a foreign state. Rubio commented to Fox News that what occurred in the UK over the weekend represented a very serious situation, adding that more information would emerge in the coming days, though he could only share limited details at that time.
The Iranian embassy in London issued a statement categorically rejecting and strongly condemning what it described as "unfounded and malicious speculations" linking Iran to the event. The RAF base has served as a forward operating location for the US Air Force (USAF) for several decades. In recent months, US bombers have departed from the base for the Middle East following the UK's approval of a US request to use it for what the government terms defensive strikes against Iran. Iran stated in July that any base utilized for aggression against Iranian territory constitutes a legitimate target for its forces.
CTP confirmed that the five men, aged between 23 and 25 and from London, remain under investigation, and their release is contingent upon stringent conditions regarding their movement and contact with others. Earlier on Monday, Donald Trump stated at the White House that he would have preferred the men not to be granted bail, expressing surprise at their release. Prime Minister Andy Burnham chaired a Cobra meeting on Monday and advised the public against speculating while authorities work to establish the complete facts.
On Tuesday, a heavily guarded police cordon remained in place around the RAF base at Fairford. Residents of the nearby village of Whelford have been advised that they can return home. One local told the BBC that most people had gone back, but police instructed them to remain indoors and refrain from taking photographs. Another local stated they had not returned home because they wished to await more information regarding the events, as the situation felt "super dodge." Local councillor Tristan Wilkinson informed BBC local radio that the community sentiment is a combination of "confusion" and "weariness," adding that Whelford might not return to normal for a significant period.
In the village of Fairford, butcher Andrew Butler noted that people are feeling worried and somewhat panicky, stating that any suspicious vehicle that people are uncertain about could potentially pose a problem.
