Three Teenagers Found Dead After Car Enters River Wear in Sunderland
Northumbria Police reported that a black Audi A3 left the road at Panns Bank near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland and entered the River Wear just before 13:30 BST, resulting in the discovery of three deceased teenagers. One 17-year-old boy survived and was subsequently arrested.
According to BBC UK, three teenagers were discovered deceased after a car went into the River Wear. Northumbria Police stated that a black Audi A3 left the road at Panns Bank near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland and entered the water just before 13:30 BST.
Four individuals were inside the vehicle at the time, and a 17-year-old male managed to reach safety. The police force indicated that this individual is currently hospitalized with non-serious injuries and has since been arrested in connection with the event. The bodies of a teenage girl and two teenage boys were recovered from the water.
It was reported that no other vehicles were involved in the incident. Ch Supt Scott Cowie, the area commander for Sunderland, described the event as "a truly tragic incident" and added that the investigation was in its initial stages while the force worked to determine the circumstances.
Members of the public were advised to continue avoiding the area. Emergency services present during the rescue efforts included the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, the North East Ambulance Service, the Coastguard, and RNLI teams.
Sunderland AFC issued a statement on social media expressing their thoughts with the families and friends of those who died and everyone impacted by the tragedy, while also paying tribute to the emergency services. Furthermore, North East mayor Kim McGuinness mentioned that she had requested updates from the incident commander, and Labour MP for Sunderland Central, Lewis Atkinson, shared his thoughts with those involved and the responding emergency services on X.
