Maria Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition leader, has stated that she has no regrets about giving her Nobel Peace Prize medal to Donald Trump. This occurred after Trump ordered US special forces to apprehend Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas.
Speaking in Madrid, Machado praised Trump’s actions, calling the effort to remove Maduro a pivotal moment for Venezuelan freedom. She emphasized that a world leader risked his citizens’ lives for the country’s liberty, a sentiment that resonated with Trump, who described the gesture as one of mutual respect.
The Nobel Committee, which honored Machado for her efforts to restore democratic rights and achieve a peaceful transition away from authoritarianism, later clarified that the prize is non-transferable. Despite this, Machado announced coordination with the US government regarding her return to Venezuela, asserting that Washington is vital to advancing a democratic transition.
However, the political landscape remains complex. While Machado seeks to return amid calls for elections, Trump has publicly questioned her standing within Venezuela, favoring instead Maduro’s former vice president, Delcy Rodriguez. Machado remains cautious regarding future electoral participation.
