The youngest son of Zimbabwe’s late former president, Robert Mugabe, has entered guilty pleas regarding charges of illegally possessing a firearm and overstaying his visa in South Africa. Bellarmine Mugabe pleaded guilty to these two offenses following his arrest in February.
Mugabe, who is 28, has been detained alongside Tobias Matonhodze, who has pleaded guilty to multiple counts including attempted murder and illegal immigration. Both men were arraigned in Alexandra and were questioned about potential outcomes with their legal counsel.
The arrests followed an incident in February when police were called to Mugabe’s residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, after a man was shot inside the property. Prosecutors suggested the shooting resulted from an argument among the individuals involved.
The matter remains ongoing, with sentencing proceedings rescheduled for April 24th. Authorities continue to search the premises for the firearm that was used in the incident, though the National Prosecuting Authority has provided mixed updates regarding all the charges brought against the pair.
