An official announcement, reported by the South China Morning Post, indicates that individuals from Hong Kong moving to the United Kingdom under the British National (Overseas) visa scheme will be exempt from proposed plans to double the time required to qualify for settlement to 10 years.
However, these applicants will still be subject to more rigorous standards concerning English language proficiency and criminal records. Furthermore, they must adhere to current stipulations, which include residing continuously in the UK for five years and successfully passing the Life in the UK test.
British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood detailed plans on Monday to revise immigration regulations, which would otherwise mean that migrants would no longer automatically qualify for permanent residency in the UK after five years.
