On April 15, 2026, Chinese President and Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping held a high‑level meeting with Vietnamese President and CPV General Secretary To Lam in Beijing. This was To Lam’s first foreign trip after being elected to a full term as Vietnam’s president, coming a year after Xi’s own historic visit to the Southeast Asian country.
Xi underscored China’s commitment to deepening comprehensive strategic cooperation with Vietnam, calling for the rapid construction of a higher‑level China‑Vietnam community that shares a common future. He highlighted the strategic significance of the partnership and affirmed that China consistently prioritises Vietnam in its neighbourhood diplomacy.
The leaders stressed the importance of maintaining the core role of their respective communist parties, the alignment of socialist paths, and a shared interest in safeguarding the socialist system. They agreed to stay strategically vigilant and resolve to ensure reforms do not alter the fundamental direction of either nation’s system.
Both sides pledged to advance joint efforts in infrastructure connectivity, emerging technologies such as AI, semiconductors and the Internet of Things, and to promote Vietnam’s high‑quality products into the Chinese market. The talks also launched a China‑Vietnam tourism cooperation year for 2026‑2027, expanding friendly exchanges across culture, media, education, health, sports and other fields.
