Tyler Robinson, charged with the fatal shooting of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at a Utah Valley University event, is set to appear in court on Friday to address a motion to exclude news cameras. His lawyers argue that the case should be heard without the presence of a video recording of the murder, citing concerns about the defendant’s rights and the integrity of the trial.
Robinson has yet to enter a plea, a delay that has extended the proceedings more than seven months after the September 2025 shooting. The hearing will weigh the public’s First Amendment right to see court proceedings against Robinson’s constitutional entitlement to a fair trial.
Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s widow and the victim’s representative, has urged the court to preserve meaningful media access throughout the case. Several media outlets, including Fox News, have also requested that cameras remain in the courtroom, emphasizing the importance of public transparency.
Judge Tony Graf has permitted a news camera to be present, but only under conditions that it does not capture private conversations or the faces of Robinson’s family. An expert witness, social psychologist Bryan Edelman, is slated to testify on how widespread media coverage could influence the jury pool.
