Ukrainian police successfully neutralized an armed gunman who opened fire on civilians and took hostages in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district on Saturday. The attack prompted a tense standoff inside a local supermarket.
According to officials, special tactical police units entered the supermarket after negotiations failed, following the assailant’s shooting of law enforcement officers during the confrontation. Despite efforts to persuade the gunman—including offering medical aid—authorities ultimately received the order to neutralize the threat.
The attacker has been identified as a 58-year-old man from Moscow, though the motive for the violence remains unknown. During the incident, at least six people were killed, and four hostages were rescued.
While at least 10 other individuals, including one child, required hospitalization, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued condolences to the victims’ families, stressing that authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the events.
